In the last week of August Veronika Schlicker travelled to Bolgatanga to meet up with our Ghanaian partner Youth Harvest Foundation. The visit turned its attention mainly to the ongoing Remedial School project. This year up to 50 students take part and 24 girls are accommodated in the local housing.
8 volunteer teachers provide lessons in math, English, social science and general science. To increase the support for the participants, a back-up system was installed. Every staff member looks after 5 students and supports them on every needed level. Furthermore YHFG invited role models to deliver their life stories to the young girls to motivate them.
During the visit, YHFG organised a homecoming for past students of the Girls Remedial School. The intention behind this event is to form an alumni group and strengthen a lasting relationship with past and current beneficiaries in the promotion of girl-child education and skills development. During this event Veronika was able to interact both with past and present students to learn about their views, successes and challenges regarding the project.
A meeting was also held with teachers to evaluate the impact of the Girls Remedial School. We discussed how to implement improvements for next year’s class and the future of the project.
