High failure rate in the final exams of Junior and Senior High Schools affects girl’s education and future prospects in the north of Ghana. In order to pursue the goal of retaining girls in school and helping them to avoid child marriage and successfully complete their education, in 2013 YHFG and JPG initiated the free remedial school for girls (GSS) at the youth centre in Yikene, Bolgatanga.
This project aims at students who have failed one or subjects, in their final year senior high school examinations but cannot afford to attend (commercial) remedial classes or live in remote villages. These girls can apply to participate in the free Remedial Classes between March and November. 24 girls can lodge in the accommodation of the Youth Centre. The Remedial Classes run from March to November each year and prepares the participants to resit any failed papers in the October-November examinations. The program focuses on the core subjects, including Mathematics, English, Social Studies and General Science. Apart from intensive academic support, at the youth centre the girls have access to electricity and internet to support them in their studies.
